Artist statement

Outdoor landscapes

When I paint, I’m trying to find the humidity in the atmosphere, the smell in the air. I try to convey these sensations in a way as simple as possible.

My landscapes are influenced by the different moods and spiritual qualities of light. I work outdoors and finish them in one session, never re-touching them in the studio.

Water and the characteristics of the light, especially reflected light are constant sources of inspiration.

I mainly work with simple and inexpensive materials—everyday elements being recycled—such as coffee stirrers, skewer sticks, tea, coffee, construction paper and children’s watercolors.

I deeply admire the exquisite rendering of nature in traditional East Asian brushwork and strive to achieve that level of beauty and simplicity.
